COURSES – SPRING 2026 (Under Dev) / Performing Arts / SHAKESPEARE: HAMLET

Coordinators: Roy Clary, Jim Brook, Ellie Schaffer

The class will explore the shortest and most unified of all of Shakespeare’s plays.

Written in 1600, Hamlet remains the most celebrated tragedy in the English language. Although it contains crowd pleasing scenes of ghosts and mayhem, its fame is more attributed to the mystery surrounding its main character: Hamlet. He presents a different face to each of us: hard and soft, cruel and gentle, brutal and angelic, like a lion and like a dove. Our exploration will endeavor to discover the truth or truths that explain the mystery of Hamlet.

To aid our understanding, clips from several films will be shown. (The Folger Library edition is preferred.)
