Course Schedule – Fall 2024 / Old Courses / MODERN OPERA
Coordinators: Steve Koenig, Frieda Lipp, Victor Brener
At each session, we view a different opera and engage in a lively discussion of the text, staging, medium and score.
Opera has developed along many paths and styles over the last two centuries. In each session, we will view an opera and discuss that opera’s libretto, staging, orchestration, singing, and historical context.
Composers might include Richard Strauss, Alban Berg, Benjamin Britten, Kurt Weill, Leoš Janácˇek, and some you’ve never heard of. We’ll include electronic, jazz, multi- media, and conceptual opera.
