Courses – Fall 2025 / History and Philosophy / FEDERALIST PAPERS: AN INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONALISM

Coordinators: Sandy Kessler, Andrea Irvine

James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay wrote The Federalist Papers in 1787-88 as part of the successful effort to ratify the US Constitution.

Most scholars now consider this work to be the greatest commentary on American constitutionalism ever written as well as the greatest American contribution to the canon of political philosophy. In our class, we will study this American classic in order to understand how our constitutional government is supposed to work, how it is faring in the Trump era, and how it can now help us to preserve our freedom.
