John Locke has often been called “America’s Political Philosopher” because of his influence on American ideas and institutions.

In this course we will discuss two of Locke’s most significant writings, A Letter on Toleration and The Second Treatise of Government. We will also relate Locke’s ideas on religious freedom, the separation of church and state, capitalism, constitutional government, and the right to revolution to the ideas of our Founding Fathers and to current American political life.
