QUESTER’S CHOICE II
August Wilson, Poet and Playwright
Presenter: Ann Goerdt
Presentation Date: September 29, 2026
August Wilson, best known for his ten plays that form the American Century Cycle, was a poet as well as a playwright. What in his background prepared him to tell the story of African American people across the twentieth century, and to have it recognized as one of the greatest epic poems of American letters? Examining his life experiences in the first three decades of his life helps us to understand how well qualified he was, and perhaps to further increase our appreciation for his plays as they unfold from 1904 to 1997.
