COURSES – FALL 2026 / Literature / WONDERFUL BOOKS OUT LOUD: HEMINGWAY AND GARCIA MARQUEZ
Coordinators: Harriet Finkelstein, Larry Shapiro, Ruth Ward
We will discuss in this class works of two Nobel Laureate writers, one American and once Columbian.
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is the story of an old fisherman’s journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat. Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez tells the story of the murder of Santiago Nasar by the Vicario twins.
Join us as we probe, discuss, and enjoy reading aloud the novellas of these two Nobel Prize in Literature recipients.
Lead coordinator Harriet Finkelstein and co-coordinators Ruth Ward and Larry Shapiro will alternate in facilitating the reading and discussion of the two novellas The Old Man and the Sea and Chronicle of a Death Foretold.
