COURSES – FALL 2026 / Literature / TIMELESS WRITINGS: THE TALE OF GENJI
Coordinators: Sheryl Harawitz, Mary Ann Donnelly, Judy Hampson, Andrea Irvine
We continue our journey eastward to Japan with The Tale of Genji, written over a thousand years ago by Murasaki Shikibu and often considered the world’s first novel.
She tells the story of Genji and the circle of people around him. The narrative is studded with short poems—distinctive features of Heian court culture—through which characters express feeling, wit, and social nuance. Entering this world offers both a literary adventure and a glimpse into a remarkably refined and distant culture.
