GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY
Failures of the Famed

Presenter: Peter Dichter
Presentation Date: September 8, 2025

Even the giants of Broadway had their flops. But their shows that bombed were still created by geniuses. So what went wrong? And were the failures total failures? Some of them were first efforts that showed enough promise to allow the teams to go on to create subsequent masterpieces. Some were just book miscalculations that contained a thrilling song. We will analyze these flops and listen to selected moments from them and judge their “faults” by ourselves.

Meredith Willson’s The Music Man

Presenter: Ellie Schaffer
Presentation Date: September 22, 2025

The Music Man is not a simple depiction of Willson’s small-town mid-Western upbringing. It reflects a 30-year musical career including years as a flutist with the New York Philharmonic, one of his many musical accomplishments. We look briefly at Willson’s extraordinary career and then explore his unique approach to musical storytelling. From the opening scene where salesmen on a train speaks in the rhythm of its motion, to rapid-fire patter songs and soaring ballads, to the growing unity of the townsfolk expressed through barbershop quartet harmonies — we marvel at the musical’s authenticity and charm.
